    Kaiser Chiefs Play The Forum

I talk a lot about light when I speak of live music photography - where flash is rarely permitted - and it has to be said, given it was a major band this was probably the worst light I've ever had to shoot a gig. It was terrible, with barely any light on lead singer Ricky Wilson. When there was it was a harsh red or blue light, where there's nothing that can be done to alter it - even in Photoshop. The result was a set of photos which will never be used. A shame because, as the two photos below show, there are nice photos to be had from such an energetic band.

    1. Those pictures are pretty good. I understand your frustration for taking pictures being a photographer. But the lighting adds to the flair, spark and enjoyment of going to a live consert. For any fan this is going to be great fun, and that is what the lighting is there for.

    2. Sure, thanks for your comment.
When I speak of lighting, I mainly speak from a photography point of view, and when they have these strong tints of colour it means that newspapers and mags will steer clear due to the high saturation it produces.
Also, the bands have us photographers there to get publicity and to get their photos in publications and, knowing we're there for only the first 3 songs, it makes sense to give us at least one song where the light is decent. This is easy to do while also having interesting lighting from the fans point of view.
Moreover, as a fan, I don't like to see the entire show lit in one way, as this gig was. A bit of variety helps create atmosphere with thought given to the particular song playing.
